Avoid overpriced and fake goods

Prices vary a lot. Sisa Journal and the Korea Economic Daily (March 2026) reported some Myeongdong goods shops selling light sticks far above official or online prices. Some items also had no price tags.
Ask first. Say 이거 얼마예요? (how much is this?) and check the online price on your phone.
Fakes exist. Korean authorities and HYBE seized about 20,000 fake items at a Namdaemun Market company in 2025.
Buy light sticks and photocards from official or large stores. A word like "official" on a sign proves nothing.
Keep your receipt. You'll need it for exchanges and refunds.

Exchanging money

Myeongdong is full of exchange booths.

Use a bank or a certified booth. Visit Seoul says banks usually offer the best rates and most open 09:00–16:00. Government-certified booths show a "Certified" sign and stay open later. It advises avoiding uncertified booths.
Compare two or three boards. Rates differ by shop and by day.
Count your cash at the counter and ask for a receipt.
Not every booth follows the rules. Korea Customs inspected 104 high-risk exchange businesses in 2026 and found violations at 47, out of 1,320 registered nationwide.
Do you need much cash? Cards work almost everywhere. Keep some won for street stalls, and use WOWPASS or a Global ATM as other options.

The refund is 5–8% of your purchase. Sanitary goods, shopping bags and dried fruit are excluded.
Other shops have their own tax rules. Look for a Tax Free sign and ask.
Pack as you go. If you're flying out soon, keep tax-refund goods easy to reach.

Airport bus

Limousine bus 6015 runs between Incheon Airport and Myeongdong. Route 6001 (Dongdaemun, Myeongdong, Seoul Stn, Sinyongsan) also serves the area.

The 6015 stop list includes Myeongdong Stn (L7 Myeongdong) and Lotte Hotel IBIS Myeongdong. Check which is closer to your hotel.
Timetables change. Check the operator's site before you go, and allow extra time for traffic.
By train: take AREX to Seoul Stn, then Line 4 two stops to Myeongdong.
